1-. La Tabacalera de Lavapiés

Such a unique spot!

Please take into account that there might be some local people who wouldn’t consider this as a proper museum, but a location defined in between a squat and a contemporary art gallery in Madrid.

Why?

  • The interior walls are all covered with probably the best street art & graffiti in town.
  • La Tabacalera hosts artesanal markets where to purchase creations painted by local artists.

Hundreds of artists from all over the world get here every year to paint because of the love for art.

Artists do not only work with spray paint or markers, but they also use metal, glass, wood or any other material to practice DIY.

Getting to La Tabacalera is easy, as it is conveniently located in the city center (Calle Embajadores, 53).

FREE access to open audiences on this contemporary art museum Madrid during the weekends from 6.00PM onwards, except those days with exhibitions.

2-. La Neomudejar, a contemporary art center in Madrid, close to Atocha RENFE station.

First idea we should mention about this spot is that it’s not that known neither among travellers nor locals.

La Neo’s goal is to stay out of the regular artistic circuit. It’s an avant-garde center with a punk style.

It currently exhibits brut art and visual arts, including a video art festival in Madrid called IVAHM.

The place itself is unique. It dates back to the XIX century, when a former railway factory occupied its warehouses.

La Neomudejar is located in Calle Antonio Nebrija and opens Wednesday-Sunday from 11.00AM to 3.00PM and 5.00PM to 9.00PM in the evening.

3-. Reina Sofia, the Spanish museum of contemporary art in Madrid.

Not that many things are required to say in order to identify this place as the most famous contemporary art museum in Madrid.

Well, apart from that you should know that:

  • It closes on Tuesdays.
  • FREE access from 7.00PM to 9.00PM the rest of the days.
  • Its rooftop offers great panoramic views of Atocha area.
  • Famous Picasso’s Guernica might be observed here.

Not museums, but contemporary art galleries in Madrid to visit.

It was in the first part of this article where we were discussing about the contemporary art in Madrid.

In case you were interested in purchasing a painting for your living room, these are the galleries/fairs you have to visit.

Careful because they are only organized once a year:

ARCO, Spain’s most important contemporary art fair.

The latest edition of ARCOMadrid 2019 consolidated its role as a meeting place for collectors, galleries, curators and art professionals from all corners of the globe, paying special attention to works that best reflect their time and their position in the world.

It is not only a place where to purchase art, but also a place where to network with other galleries from all over the world.

Next edition will take place from 26th February to 1st March 2020, and if you are an art blogger like us, you may ask a press pass for the event.

These are some of the galleries which participated in last year’s event:

  • Hauser & Wirth- Nwe York (USA)
  • Jacky Strenz- Frankfurtz (Germany)
  • Lelong- Paris (France)

URVANITY, the new contemporary art fair in Madrid.

It takes place at the same time than ARCO, but focuses only in street art & post-graffiti.

Sergio Sancho, and the rest of Urvanity’s team chose COAM (Madrid’s official architect school) as the location where to celebrate the 2020 edition.

We enjoyed last 2019 with the artworks of the following artists:

  • Okudart- Santander (Spain)
  • Belin- Linares, Jaén (Spain)
  • TLP, aka The London Police (United Kingdom)
  • Antonyo Marest- Alicante (Spain)
