What was the Spanish Inquisition?

The Spanish Inquisition, or Santo Oficio, was an order established in 1478 by the Catholic Monarchs to preserve Catholic orthodoxy in their realms, particularly targeting false converts and heresy.

Over time, it became a powerful instrument of state control—as seen under Charles I’s use against Protestantism, Philip II’s focus on Moriscos, and the 1609 Morisco expulsion. Scholars at the Complutense University from Madrid emphasize the profound secrecy of its judicial procedures, which insulated inquisitorial processes from public or legal scrutiny.

Why did the Spanish Inquisition happen, and how long did it last?

The Spanish Inquisition was created in 1478 by Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile to enforce Catholic orthodoxy, especially among conversos (Jews and Muslims who had converted to Christianity but were suspected of secretly practicing their former faiths). It also served broader political purposes—strengthening royal authority, unifying the kingdoms under one religion, and guarding against Protestant and other heterodox influences.

It lasted for over three centuries, formally ending in 1834 under Queen Regent María Cristina, making it one of the longest-running institutions of its kind in European history.

How many people died during this period if time?

Likely between 3,000–5,000 over the entire 356-year period (1478–1834):

Broader punishments: many more people were fined, imprisoned, or forced into public penance without being executed.

Peak intensity: executions were more common in the late XV and early XVI centuries, then declined sharply.
