El Campo de Cebada, people’s movement.
Those of you who moved to Madrid recently may not know the history this place holds. To start with, you should know that the area where El Campo de Cebada is located nowadays was once used as a polideportivo municipal in Madrid (community sports centre). It was abandoned by 2007 and demolished. The neighbors from ‘Distrito Centro’ (Sol & surrounding areas) reopened the space in 2010 for “La noche en blanco” (famous cultural event in Madrid). It was an activity to criticize Mahou’s involvement (Spanish beer brand) and to celebrate the reopening of this public space.
That same year, neighbors created a hybrid model for an intervention of today’s crisis. A self-managed project came alive in October 2010 and the 15M movement made official the creation of the assambly that has managed this open area for more than 5 years now.
